A touch of destiny ...
In Homer's epic poem °The Odyssey°, Calypso is the goddess of the sea. She controls the energy and currents of wind and water. Full of reverence, Zeus and Poseidon banish her to the deserted island of Ogygia. The spirit island is considered the navel of the earth - crisscrossed by trees and roots, it is everywhere and nowhere.
This painting translates the story and fate of Calypso in form, color, structure and material.
The roots of the island of Ogygia, which grow up to Calypso's face, are made of parts of the mulberry tree. In the dark parts of the painting we find bitumen as a concrete manifestation of the ancient connection with the earth. The different colored eyes reflect the destiny and the connection of water and earth in Calypso's life and in the life of every human being.
